Laverne Dale Fuchs/Fox

Vern Fox

L D Fox

Laverne was called by all the name listed above, mostly called Vern. Laverne Dale Fuchs was the Name that he was born with. Laverne was born August 12, 1915 in Laurens, Iowa. He grew up on a farm.

Vern Fuchs had the spelling of his last name changed from Fuchs to Fox along with too other brothers (Carl and Lloyd) to cause less problems with the pronunciation of are last name both meaning Fox.

Vern father Charles was 51 years old and his mother was 45 years old when Vern Came Along, his next youngest sibling was 13 years younger. Vern grew up in Laurens,Iowa. He went to school only into the ten year of high school. After school he went to work for his brother Otto Fuchs,in the roller skating business. Vern's brothers Carl and Lloyd. Vern would make this business his life's work. My father (Vern is my father) worked for Otto moving around the country working in the rinks as Otto right hand man or on his own running his brothers business's.

On June 15, 1939 Vern Fox started to learn to fly airplanes and on August 21, 1939 he soloed. He was living in Dubuque, Iowa at the time. On January 2, 1942 he paid $1360.00 for a Cub Cadet (J3F-65) tail # NC 38506 airplane of his own. Everything appeared to be going his way. The entry's in his pilot log book stopped in march of 1942. This is part theory and part of what I was told by my father. Vern was a private man. He told me that he only had the plane about 3 months before he found out that he had Tuberculosis, and confined to a hospital for those who had tuberculosis they called them sanitariums back then. There were very few drugs to use on tuberculosis (TB) then. They used bed rest, My father said that the first 6 months that he laid flat on his back with not even a pillow! He also said that he had a lot of time to think about what was really important in live. My father had 4 long years to think about what was important in his life. I think that what made him such a good father and husband to his wife my mother. At one time after m Father told my mother that he would have liked to become an aircraft instructor for pilots for WW II.

It appears that after his release from the hospital he was put on his brother Carl's pay roll, after that his brother Lloyd Fox had a job in Des Monies,Iowa area selling and installing popcorn machine's.That where my father (Vern) met His wife.

On October 5, 1947 my father was married to Georgia Marie Lewis in Des Monies, Polk Co.,Iowa. At the time my mother was working in a clothing store.
During my father and mother traveling around their two son's were born in Wisconsin
In 1952 my father (Vern) bought a roller skating rink in Camanche, Iowa, this was not a probable rink. This rink was operated until until 1981 by Vern Fox and the help of his two sons.
then his older son bought the rink and operated it until 2000
Vern love to travel and go fishing in his sons boat on the Mississippi river.
Laverne Dale Fox died on September 17, 1997 of congenial heart failure and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Camanche, Iowa on September 21, 1997.
Georgia Marie Lewis was born November 12, 1921 in Linn Grove, Iowa Georgia father was Thomas Lewis and Ruth (Penn) Lewis her mother. Georgia had two brothers Thomas Willis Lewis and Robert Joe Lewis.
Georgia worked with her husband Vern in the roller skating business early in their marriage. At one point they were running two rinks. One rink in Fundulac,Wisconsin and the other in Green Bay, Wisconsin Georgia managed one and her husband Vern ran the other. After they bought the rink in Camanche, Iowa, Georgia was still involved in the skating rink. At the point were there two sons were old enough she stayed at home to raise theirs sons. After the dead of her husband she stayed living in here home with some help from her family. She believes in doing all she can for her self. As of October 2007 she is still blessing her family.

Otto A Fuchs

Otto A Fuchs

Otto Fuchs was the 10 child born to Charles and Anna Martha (Alborn) Fuchs. Otto also was the one hardest to find information on, he was my fathers closest brother but with him gone and the rest of his family gone,I struggled to find facts on him?

Otto was born July 8, 1902 in Laurens, Iowa. Otto was married to a lady name Loretta (no maiden) very little could be found out on her. My information come from my mother and thing that I remember that my father (Vern) said. Their are story's of Otto and Loretta having a child and that child died at a young age. I can not confirm or deny this story? It is believed that Loretta was from Illinois. Otto spent a lot of time in Illinois when he was younger, or the years that he was working Before he retired.

Otto married Martha Manson after many years of knowing her on November 20, 1969 at the Wesleyan Church in Sand Lake Township, Sawyer Co.,Wisconsin. Otto and Martha lived in what was know as the north woods beach area south of Hayward, Wisconsin on lake Lac Court Oreilles north shore, his address was R#2 Hayward in care of the Foxhole.

Otto was was raised around the roller skating business along with his brothers Carl, Lloyd and his younger Laverne (Vern) Fox. Otto was very successful in the business world. My father say that Otto could be drunk and make a deal with someone and come out smelling like a rose (meaning always on top). He own and Operated the Ing skating rink in Rockford,Illinois and a number of portable staking rinks in Iowa Wisconsin and Illinois area for a number of years. Otto was living in his home in Hayward area when he died July 19, 1973. Otto was well know in the area, Fishing was his hubby of choice.

Otto was cremated and his ashes spread over the lake he lived on in the Hayward,Sawyer Co.,Wisconsin. Otto Obituary says that he was buried after cremation in the Forest Lawn Park in Saint Paul,Minnesota. I do remember the story at the time of his dead that his wishes were to have his ashes spread across the lake Lac Court Oreilles south of Hayward,Wisconsin. At the time it was not legal to spread the remain of anyone over the ground. I was told that his ashes would be spread on the lake? I choose to believe that Otto is in the lake that he loved so much.
Martha Manson Otto wife at the time of his dead was born August 5, 1914 in Illinois. Martha father Victor Manson was born in Sweden Martha mother Emily Peterson was born in Norway. Martha died in Chicago Heights,Cook Co.,Illinois in March of 1975. Martha died from problems with her liver. I believe that she had been with a daughter. from a marriage before meeting and marrying Otto.
